#MemberSpotlight on Graphic Novelists Ritwick Roy & Riddhi Trivedi

Published by

How did you get into the industry?

As children, we used to watch animated shows and read a series of comics that fascinated us. Our inclination towards art and ideation developed over time and became our passion, which we then turned into our profession.

Where are you based now, and who do you work for?

We are a Kolkata-based duo from India, and we work for our dreams. We run a studio and have been working for clients globally. To name a few: Ogilvy One, Cheil Digital, Samsung, HP. We are also developing kids' content with Tiptales, a Singapore-based company.

*

Presently, we are writing and developing an 11-book series for children, of which the first book was published in December 2022.

If you weren't in your current industry, what would you be doing?

We would own a café to meet new people and have time to create caricatures for our passion. It doesn't matter which industry you belong to when you are in love with your passion!

Can you explain your creative process? What makes it unique?

From ideation of the content to the creation of the art style and animation, we follow the traditional method. The usual process of our creation involves paper, pastels, and then moving to the PC.

*

We can work with different mediums like watercolor and stop motion, among others. Our uniqueness lies in the variety of content, creatives, and mediums we use. We believe that you are UNIQUE when U-are Not-In-the-Que!

How would you describe your style?

We don't follow a particular style, as we have worked with several mediums and projects, each having its own style. However, we love the rough brush style for our personal artworks, as we are inspired by John Nevarez.

Which individuals do you gain inspiration from? Do you have any heroes in the industry?

Pierre Alary, John Nevarez, Ralph Eggleston, and Peter de Sedev are the heroes of this industry for us. We have been following their works and drawing inspiration from them.

What tips would you give to aspiring creatives looking for work?

*

Stick to what you love and believe in the magic of dreams! Learning should always be a part of every milestone.

What tips would you give to other professionals to get more clients?

Professionalism with a blend of honesty and ethics is what makes a mark in gaining and retaining clients.

What kind of tools/kit/software could you not do without?

A pencil or a pen is the main tool for us to create or write what we have in our minds. Over time, we have had to upgrade ourselves and learn new software, but our favorite is Adobe Photoshop for bringing our thoughts to digital creatives.

*

Photoshop has been the foundation for every creation of ours and sometimes the only software we use.

What's your secret to staying inspired and motivated?

Patience and believing in ourselves are key to staying committed to our dreams and pursuing them. As a duo, we become each other's strength and motivation.

What's the work achievement you're most proud of?

Working for clients is always rewarding, but working for oneself and for our own dreams is what brings true happiness. We are proud of introducing our best creation as writers and creators of our book, 'Arc of Feathers.'

*

It's an 11-book adventure series for kids and the inner child in every adult. Our protagonist is a kid from the Himalayan region who embarks on an adventurous journey, living the magic of the folktales of the hills.

What is the one thing that you would change about the industry?

Rather than changing, we would like to add: Acceptance, Respect, and Opportunities for newcomers in the industry should be more prevalent.

Any websites, books, or resources you would recommend?

Being part of social media, we come across a lot of new things. We extensively follow IAMAG, where we find many artists and their latest works from around the world.
